Restorative Care Inspection for Works Go-ahead

As soon as your Moth-damaged and infested weaving arrives at our Rug Care Workshop Studios, we undertake a detailed restorative care inspection. Details including age, woven materials and size, as well as rug fibre condition, weave construction, and any previous stains, old repairs, colour-run are noted, where we perform a colourfastness test on a concealed area, if required. We then review the extent of the Moth damage and infestation to assess the rug or tapestry’s specific treating and cleaning requirements, and afterwards assess the potential repair works needed to secure your piece.

Encouraging renewed rug fibre suppleness

The first step in our moth damage restorative process is to perform a dry, gentle de-dusting on the Moth-damaged and Infested piece – an important step specifically designed for rugs, runners, Persian rugs and Oriental carpets. This process gently loosens dust particles and safely eliminates ingrained debris and embedded build-ups in delicate rug fibres that standard vacuuming cannot reach. It actively encourages renewed rug fibre suppleness and allows our specialised repair and restoration processes to work more effectively.

Re-Conditioning Rug Fibres For True-Colour Vibrancy

The next restorative step is hand-cleaning Moth-damaged and Infested weavings. This crucial process ensures the agitation and removal of any existing moth infestation, eggs and feeding larvae. A cleaned rug also ensures a clean weaving foundation, with re-conditioned, supple rug fibres, so that our hand-crafted repair works can be safely applied and our custom-dyed new yarns matched to the weaving’s true colours, to produce a seamless, authentic finish.

First, Moth-damaged and Infested weavings are temporarily secured with threading. Next, we apply our traditional hand-cleaning methods, combined with organic soap solutions – safe for children and pets. Our professional-grade FREE moth treatment is applied during this process to completely eradicate any existing or remaining residual moth infestations, eggs and feeding larvae, while actively rejuvenating and reconditioning the rug fibres.

Authentic Works With A Seamless Finish

Once the treatment and cleaning processes are complete and the moth infestation eradicated, we can then assess the full Moth-caused structural damage of the weave. We provide a detailed estimate for repair and restoration and await confirmation of go-ahead. Repair works can only be hand-applied to a clean, dust/dirt/infestation-free weaving foundation, thereby allowing us to dye-match newly installed yarns to the weaving’s true colours, and hand-apply works safely to cleaned and conditioned rug fibres, to produce a seamless, authentic finish.

Moth Infestations can occur in any rug or tapestry weaving. Moth eggs and larvae feed off the rug fibres, causing damaged areas that can range in size and severity across the weaving pile and foundation. Once a moth infestation has taken hold, subsequent moth damage can escalate rapidly, making it essential to act quickly and get your moth-infected weaving treated, cleaned and restored professionally. If after cleaning the weave damage is then left unrepaired, it may lead to further disintegration of an already damaged weave, and the piece becoming more hazardous to use.

Restorative works are imperative to resurrect a Moth-damaged weaving. Our professional expertise can preserve the original craftsmanship and prevent the piece from deteriorating further, by applying our hand-crafted restorative methods and techniques to preserve its value, functionality and longevity.

Hand-crafted restorative works for Moth-damaged areas depend on the weave and the extent of the damage involved. The first stage involves restructuring the weave foundation. Here, new yarns are matched up and hand-spun to the correct thickness to create new warp foundation threads that are needed to replace the missing areas. Next, the varying spun yarns are custom-hand-dyed to accurately match the original weave’s warp thread colours. The newly-dyed yarn threads are then meticulously applied and re-woven into the missing foundation areas.

After threading works are complete, the newly formed woven areas and fringes are brushed out and then ironed to lie smooth. Any newly woven pile is then trimmed to the original pile length and fringes either trimmed to the original length or the requested length for an authentic finish.

Next, more new yarns are matched up, hand-spun to the correct thickness, and then custom-hand-dyed to match original weaves pile areas, knots and any fringe kilim ends. A graph paper gridded design is drawn to scale of the missing pattern, and used when needed. These newly-dyed yarn threads are then carefully rewoven into the weave to reconstruct the original design, by re-piling and re-fringing the previously missing and damaged areas. Here, we use our range of bespoke craftsman tools and rug hooks to re-knot the yarn and reweave the original patterns and colours for a previously moth damaged and infested weaving, to create a professional finish and ensure a seamless restoration.

After threading works are complete, the newly formed woven areas and fringes are brushed out and then flat ironed to lie smooth. Any newly woven pile is then trimmed to the original pile length and fringes either trimmed to the original length or the requested length for an authentic finish.
