Although rugs are generally used and viewed as ‘art on the floor’, finer woven pieces such as tapestries, silk rugs and textiles, flat weaves such as Sumak, Aubusson and Savonnerie or antique, rare and decorative-embellished weavings such as Suzanis, greatly benefit from being displayed as 'art on the wall' creating an eye-catching focal point in your homes, as part of your unique interior décor.

Problems such as concentrated foot-fall, the abrasive action of moving doors, or the constant pressure of heavy, static furniture being placed on top of this type of weaving can exacerbate the pile tension, wear out the foundation and damage the warp and weft threads at a much faster rate. This may result in repair or more in-depth restoration works being needed at a later stage.

WALL-HANGING DISPLAY

As Rug and Tapestry Specialists, we have devised a hand-crafted, durable and concealed wall-hanging method that is safe to apply and suitable to use for all types of rugs, tapestries and textiles of any size.

First, we carefully assess the size, weight and condition of each individual piece for our hanging technique service, prior to any work being undertaken, to ensure it can be properly and evenly supported and conserved by the hanging apparatus. This method has proved very popular over the years.

Next, we meticulously apply bespoke hand-stitched works, to attach cotton casing to the reverse of the piece, while ensuring the foundation of the weave is fully supported and the casing secure. Purpose-made light metal hanging rails are inserted at the top to support the piece, while a second rail is inserted at the bottom, to provide a gentle-weighted, even tension that ensures the piece lies flush to the wall.

Once in place, the piece can then be mounted on either picture hooks or screws and secured to a wall. The rails can also be easily removed from the piece to allow for professional cleaning or for shaking out, if needed. This technique produces a dynamic and tactile weaving display similar to an oil-painted canvas and is suitable for all types of weavings.

FRAME-MOUNTED DISPLAY

We also offer a hand-crafted frame-mounted display technique, suitable for finer weaves or tapestries. First, the weaving is carefully and securely hand-stitched along the width and length onto a conservation-grade cotton or linen-weave backing, to give it much needed support and protection. Next, the cotton backing (with the weaving attached) is gently and carefully stretched over a wooden-cross frame and the cotton backing securely fixed to the back of the frame. This display method gives a completely flat-mounted and gently-tensioned finish – similar to a painted canvas.

We have previously used this hand-crafted technique for many customer pieces – where more recently our technique was applied to display 30 silk tapestries exhibited at an Arts and Textiles Museum. This method gives a professional finish, while protecting the textile weave and is especially suited to embroidered, appliqued and embellished weavings.
