Restorative Care Inspection for Works Go-ahead
As soon as your Holes, Splits and Tear-damaged weaving arrives at our Rug Care Workshop Studios, we undertake a detailed restorative care inspection. Details including age, woven materials and size, as well as rug fibre condition, weave construction, and any previous stains, old repairs, colour-run, or moth damage are noted, where we perform a colourfastness test on a concealed area, if required. We then review the extent of the Holes, Splits and Tear damage, to assess the rug or tapestry’s specific treating and cleaning requirements, and afterwards the potential repair works needed to secure your piece.Encouraging renewed rug fibre suppleness
The first step in our restorative process is to perform a dry, gentle de-dusting on the Holes, Splits and Tear-damaged piece – an important step specifically designed for rugs, runners, Persian rugs and Oriental carpets. This process gently loosens dust particles and safely eliminates ingrained debris and embedded build-ups in delicate rug fibres that standard vacuuming cannot reach. It actively encourages renewed rug fibre suppleness and allows our specialised repair and restoration processes to work more effectively.Re-Conditioning Rug Fibres For True-Colour Vibrancy
The next restorative step is hand-cleaning Holes, Splits and Tear-damaged weavings. This crucial process ensures a clean weaving foundation, with re-conditioned, supple rug fibres, so that our hand-crafted repair works can be safely applied and our custom-dyed new yarns matched to the weaving’s true colours, to produce a seamless, authentic finish.First, Holes, Splits and Tear-damaged weavings are temporarily secured with threading. Next, we apply our traditional hand-cleaning methods, combined with organic soap solutions – safe for children and pets. Every clean includes a FREE hand-conditioning treatment for fringes and a FREE professional-grade moth treatment to prolong the lifespan of your rug. Our hand-cleaning methods actively rejuvenate and recondition rug yarn fibres, with allergens removed, colours and textures revived, and the lustre restored.

Authentic Works With A Seamless Professional Finish
After the hand-cleaning process, restorative repair works for Holes, Splits and Tear damage can now be safely hand-applied.Holes, Splits and Tears damage to a piece can be caused by a number of varying factors. If the damage is left untreated, it may lead to further disintegration of an already damaged weave, with the piece becoming more difficult to use safely and causing a potential trip hazard. This in turn leads to more long-term weave foundation structural damage.
Restorative works are imperative to resurrect a Holes, Splits and Tear-damaged weaving. Our professional expertise can restore the missing and damaged areas and preserve the original craftsmanship from deteriorating further, by applying our hand-crafted restorative methods and techniques to preserve its value, functionality and longevity.
The first stage involves restructuring the weave foundation. Here, new yarns are matched up and hand-spun to the correct thickness to create new warp foundation threads that are needed to replace the missing areas. Next, the varying spun yarns are custom-hand-dyed to accurately match the original weave’s warp thread colours. The newly-dyed yarn threads are then meticulously applied and re-woven into the missing foundation areas.
Next, more new yarns are matched up, hand-spun to the correct thickness, and then custom-hand-dyed to match original weaves pile areas, knots and any fringe kilim ends. A graph paper gridded design is drawn to scale of the missing pattern, and used when needed. These newly-dyed yarn threads are then carefully rewoven into the weave to reconstruct the original design, by re-piling and re-fringing the previously missing and damaged areas. Here, we use our range of bespoke craftsman tools and rug hooks to re-knot the yarn and reweave the original patterns and colours.
To ensure the new woven areas are securely joined, we thread a thin cotton thread through the foundation of the weave – having previously hand-spun and custom-hand-dyed it – to gently and carefully draw all of the weave together, thereby closing any gaps between the original and newly constructed, woven areas. This important step ensures a seamless restoration with a professional finish.
Once the reweaving, re-piling and re-fringing works are complete, the newly constructed woven areas are brushed out. The weaving is then flat ironed to ensure it remains even and stable, with any pile smoothed out and/or trimmed to match the original length, to ensure an authentic finish and the piece is now safe to use.
