RUG | TAPESTRY HANDLING CARE

From the moment your rug or tapestry weaving is collected, it is handled and treated with the utmost care during each stage of the treatment and cleaning care processes at our custom-built Rug Care Workshop Studios. We have a vast experience in handling an extensive variety of rug and tapestry weavings and understand your pieces are unique and precious.

INSPECTION | CLEANING WORKS GO-AHEAD

As soon as your weaving arrives at our Rug Care Workshop Studios, we undertake a detailed inspection. Each weaving is assessed for its cleaning needs – according to age, woven materials, size and condition. We also review and assess weave fibres and construction, documenting any previous stains, old repairs, colour-run, fibre wear or moth damage, and perform a colourfastness test on a concealed area, if needed.

After inspection, we reconfirm the initial hand-cleaning quote given, or if anything changes, we notify you first and update the details, before any works proceed.

Rugs arriving with spills, stains and odours are assessed for specific treatments, as well as hand-cleaning. We offer a full range of individually formulated stain and odour treatments suitable for all types of rugs and tapestries that are safe for children and pets. Treatment works, if needed, are assessed and costed separately from hand-cleaning works. They are non-obligatory and only applied if requested, with the details relayed to the customer. To ensure the best results, treatments are applied by hand before, and occasionally after, the hand-cleaning process.

DRY DE-DUSTING | DEBRIS REMOVAL

Before any stain treatments or cleaning steps are undertaken, we perform a dry de-dusting on the piece. This crucial step is specifically designed for rugs, runners, Persian rugs and Oriental carpets, to gently loosen dust particles and safely eliminate ingrained debris and embedded build-ups in delicate rug fibres that standard vacuuming cannot reach. This process effectively protects and prevents any undue fibre abrasion, while encouraging renewed rug fibre suppleness, thereby allowing our specialised treatment applications, cleaning and conditioning processes to work more effectively.

STAINS | SPILLS | ODOURS HAND-CLEANING AND CONDITIONING TREATMENTS

Treatments are hand-applied to target stained and odorous problem areas in a carefully formulated, multi-step approach before, and occasionally after, hand-cleaning. Treatments disinfect, alleviate and vastly improve deeply absorbed and saturated, stubborn stains, spills and odours such as: food and drink spills, pet mishaps and odours, wine stains, colour-run and much more, while preserving delicate yarn fibres and extending the longevity of your rug, Oriental carpet, Persian rug or tapestry.

HAND CLEANING | FRINGES CONDITIONING | FREE MOTH TREATMENT

We apply traditional deep-wash, hand-cleaning methods combined with organic soap solutions – that are safe for children and pets. Our carefully controlled, cleaning care processes gently penetrate and deep cleanse each piece and any treated areas – giving your weaving a better, more reconditioned clean, with colours and textures revived, woven fibres and pile refreshed, allergens removed and yarn lustre restored.

All hand-cleaning works (with or without added treatments) include a FREE hand-conditioning treatment for fringes and a FREE professional-grade moth treatment that eliminates infestations, eggs and larvae, to protect and prolong the lifespan of your rug, while actively rejuvenating and reconditioning yarn fibres.

TREATMENTS FLUSHING OUT | WATER EXTRACTION

If your rug is being treated for specific stains and odours, second-stage, post-cleaning treatments are applied by hand, to target any lingering marks or stubborn spots, if needed.

Afterwards, all cleaning solutions and any treatments are thoroughly flushed out and sluiced away with clean fresh water. This vital step ensures all residues and odours are completely eliminated – leaving yarn fibres rejuvenated and your piece reconditioned. The weaving is then brushed in the direction of the pile to release water build-ups and encourage water extraction, thereby allowing for much-improved gentle drying and aerating cycles.

PROFESSIONAL RINSING | MOISTURE REDUCTION

An essential pre-drying, moisture-reduction process for large or heavily-compacted woven rugs such as Oriental and Persian carpets that require professionally-controlled rinsing, to ensure complete removal of all stain treatment residues and ensure no cleaning soap solutions remain. Pieces are carefully rolled and control-rinsed to ensure excess moisture and water build-ups are released from the rug fibres safely in preparation for the drying process, while ensuring colours stay true, yarn fibres stay strong and the piece retains its shape.

FRINGE DRESSING | HANGING | DRYING

Careful professional drying prevents any potential, fibre-trapped, moisture build-ups that can cause mould and mildew to take hold, if the piece is not thoroughly aired and dried, as well as ensuring the richness and depth of the original colours are retained. Cleaned weavings are placed in temperature-controlled aerating rooms, either hung or laid flat on frames – depending on their weave type, age, size and weight. Fringes are then hand-brushed and straightened out while damp.

BUFFING | POLISHING | RELAYING THE NAP

When dry, rug yarn fibres are brushed out, the nap laid and the pile buffed and polished. After a final inspection, cleaned weavings are carefully rolled and securely encased in protective waterproof sleeves – ready for FREE return delivery to your door, booked at a time that is best for you.
