Restorative Care Inspection for Works Go-ahead
As soon as your Dented or Furniture-damaged weaving arrives at our Rug Care Workshop Studios, we undertake a detailed restorative care inspection. Details including age, woven materials and size, as well as rug fibre condition, weave construction, and any previous stains, old repairs, colour-run, or moth damage are noted, where we perform a colourfastness test on a concealed area, if required. We then review the extent of the Dented or Furniture damage, to assess the rug or tapestry’s specific treating and cleaning requirements, and afterwards the potential repair works needed to secure your piece.Encouraging renewed rug fibre suppleness
The first step in our restorative process is to perform a dry, gentle de-dusting on the Dented or Furniture-damaged piece – an important step specifically designed for rugs, runners, Persian rugs and Oriental carpets. This process gently loosens dust particles and safely eliminates ingrained debris and embedded build-ups in delicate rug fibres that standard vacuuming cannot reach. It actively encourages renewed rug fibre suppleness and allows our specialised repair and restoration processes to work more effectively.Re-Conditioning Rug Fibres For True-Colour Vibrancy
The next restorative step is hand-cleaning Dented or Furniture-damaged weavings. This crucial process ensures a clean weaving foundation, with re-conditioned, supple rug fibres, so that our hand-crafted repair works can be safely applied and our custom-dyed new yarns matched to the weaving’s true colours, to produce a seamless, authentic finish. We apply our traditional hand-cleaning methods, combined with organic soap solutions – safe for children and pets. Every clean includes a FREE hand-conditioning treatment for fringes and a FREE professional-grade moth treatment to prolong the lifespan of your rug. Our hand-cleaning methods actively rejuvenate and recondition rug yarn fibres, with allergens removed, colours and textures revived, and the lustre restored.

Authentic Works With A Seamless Professional Finish
Dented or Furniture damage to a piece can be caused by a number of varying stationary or heavy-weighted factors, where the pile or weave becomes more compressed over time. Water penetration can exacerbate long-term compression, stains and colour-fading, where the weave may have also begun to pucker and ripple. If the damage is left untreated, it may lead to further disintegration of an already damaged weave, with the piece becoming more difficult to use safely and causing a potential trip hazard. This in turn leads to more long-term weave foundation structural damage.Restorative works are imperative to resurrect a Dented or Furniture-damaged weaving. If caught in time, we can restore and halt any further works needing to be applied at a later date. Our professional expertise can preserve the original craftsmanship and prevent the piece from deteriorating further, by applying our hand-crafted restorative methods and techniques to preserve its value, functionality and longevity.
After the initial hand-cleaning, we review the Dented or Furniture-damaged weaving while still damp. In some instances, we apply steam and gently brush out the compressed fibres to restore their original lustre and condition. Once the weaving has been aired and has completed the drying process, the whole weaving is flat ironed to ensure the pile is smoothed out and even across the entire piece, and the weaving is safe to use once more.
However, if after careful hand cleaning, stains or damp damage remain, or the pile weave condition becomes more fragile where the damage was caused, the piece is further assessed and reviewed.
First, any pile-worn or rotted weave is carefully removed. Next, new yarns are matched up and hand-spun to the correct thickness of the existing warp foundation threads, needed to replace the rotted foundation areas. Next, the spun yarns are custom-hand-dyed to accurately match the original weave’s warp thread colours and then meticulously re-woven into the missing areas.
Once the above stage is complete, more new yarns are hands-spun to the correct thickness of the existing weft pile and custom-hand-dyed to match the weave’s now missing pile and pattern. A graph paper gridded design is drawn to scale of the missing pattern, and used when needed. Newly-dyed yarn threads are then carefully rewoven to reconstruct the original pile and pattern – re-piling and re-fringing previously rotted and pile-worn damaged areas. We use our range of bespoke craftsman tools and rug hooks, throughout to create a professional finish and ensure a seamless restoration.
Once the reweaving is complete, the newly formed woven areas and fringes are brushed out and then flat ironed to lie smooth. Any newly woven pile is trimmed to the original pile length and fringes are either trimmed to the original length or to the requested length for an authentic finish.
