Alteration Care Inspection for Works Go-ahead

As soon as your weaving arrives at our Rug Care Workshop Studios for reshaping and resizing works, we review and assess the weave’s size and woven fibres’ condition and construction, to ensure the customer’s requested alteration works can be applied safely and securely, before any works proceed.

Encouraging renewed rug fibre suppleness

The first step in our alteration process is to perform a dry, gentle de-dusting on the piece if needed, before any alteration or cleaning is undertaken. Specifically designed for rugs and runners, this process gently loosens dust particles and safely eliminate ingrained debris and embedded build-ups in delicate rug fibres that standard vacuuming cannot reach. It further encourages renewed rug fibre suppleness, thereby allowing our specialised alteration processes to be applied more effectively.

Designing A Template

Alteration templates are hand-crafted for individual jobs, depending on the works required. Here, the original piece is measured to ensure the exact size. Next, for complex alterations such as: reshaping, reducing and resizing works, we draw out a gridded template calculated to scale, with the alteration new design overlaid square by square onto the original rug or runner template – to ensure a match in size, weave knot and pile direction. Any further modifications to the reshaping and resizing of the piece are applied to the template, before any cutting works are undertaken.

Alterations with Flawless Finishings

The next step is to match new threads to original yarn fibres. Here, the types of yarn used for threading, edging, binding and fringes are matched up. Next the yarns are hand-spun to the exact thickness and width of the warp and weft threads, original fringes, and binding and edging threads. Next, the spun yarn is custom hand-dyed to accurately match the original weave thread colours or to create the customer’s chosen colour palette.

With the template in hand, the original piece is laid out and carefully cut into the formulated sizes and design shape, ensuring all measurements are exact throughout the process. Next, using our range of bespoke craftsman tools and needles, the newly-cut, resized and reshaped piece is professionally joined and meticulously secured. The template is then used to match the newly-dyed threads, with the colours, pattern and pile of the original weave, to create a seamless blend. Next, binding, whipped edging and fringe works are hand-crafted, with any original labels or trimmings now re-attached. Our specialised finishing techniques are then hand-applied, to ensure the piece will not loosen or unravel over time and to create a seamless, professional finish. The newly formed piece is then flat ironed to lay the pile and enliven the lustre, with any noticeable threads trimmed to the original pile length, for an authentic completion of works.

Re-Conditioning Rug Fibres For True-Colour Vibrancy

We offer cleaning as an optional part of the process, for reshaped and resized pieces for reconditioning after alteration works are completed. As the newly-altered piece is now reduced in size, the cleaning is also reduced in cost. We apply traditional deep wash, hand-cleaning methods combined with organic soap solutions – safe for children and pets. Our cleaning care processes gently penetrate and deep cleanse each piece, giving a better, more reconditioned clean, with colours and textures revived, yarn fibres refreshed, allergens removed and lustre restored. Cleaning also includes a conditioning treatment for fringes and a FREE moth treatment that eliminates infestations, eggs and larvae, to protect and prolong the lifespan of your rug. Pieces are thoroughly aired and dried, then brushed to lay the nap, with pile fibres buffed and polished, completing the revitalising alteration process.
